Lancement Prometteur de la Résidence Ciné Guimbi 2023
I am taking part in a documentary film writing residency called » Ciné Guimbi » in Bobo Dioulasso, from November 16 to 25. In this context, I was welcomed and installed in very good conditions today, November 15, 2023.
After this comfortable night of rest, the activities started at 9:00 am as planned. And, my joy was immense for several reasons. Indeed, our two trainers are famous personalities for me. Also I must admit that I had been looking to meet for a long time to benefit from their experience. This is why it happened that I saw them after a master class or before a film screening in a movie theater. Unfortunately, the exchanges were brief. Now God is giving me the grace to be with them for about ten days and to be able to ask them all the questions that were in my head.
These two trainers are none other than Michel K. Zongo, director/producer at Diam Production . Note that he is also a member of the Academy of Oscars. In second place, we have Maimounata Nikiema , president of the National Federation of Cinema and Audiovisual. In addition, she is a director, producer at Pilumpiku Production.
Réflexions Profondes et Liberté Créative
The session began with an introduction. After an introduction by the trainees and the trainers, we were asked a first question: why did we choose to make films? For my part, I answered by explaining that since my childhood, I have liked to lead debates where I often have a point of view that I want to bring. This desire has grown over time, and I want to have my say on the common reflections that the world around us generates.
Although other artistic channels such as music, painting, literature, or the press could have been chosen. However, I turned to cinema not because I had any predispositions but above all by conviction. I believe in the adage that a picture is worth a thousand words, an idea that the trainers supported by emphasizing the power of the image and its unconscious impact on our thoughts.
Présentation des Projets et Conseils Pratiques
The trainers explained that the concepts shared during this residency go beyond our current film projects. In fact, an author, according to them, is built beyond a single film project. Then, each participant had the opportunity to talk about their project. Then the questions about location scouting, what we are going to film and with whom, were addressed. In this sense, the emphasis was placed on the fact that we do not make a film « about »; we make it « with ». However, it was emphasized that it is not a question of financial gain for the character, but other types of gains.
Continuing their advice to us, the trainers drew our attention to two types of topics: those on a new phenomenon, a discovery (easier to deal with), and those on already known topics where there is the risk of falling into reporting or information. This is why they encouraged us to ask ourselves if there is something that people have not grasped in a known story.
L'âne de fer" - Une Perspective Socio-Culturelle
À l’issue de cette première journée, j’ai rédigé mon récit dans une nouvelle direction : la dimension socioculturelle de mon histoire. Les formateurs ont recommandé des films similaires à voir absolument. Ensuite, nous avons partagé nos attentes vis-à-vis de la formation. Personnellement, j’attends des indications qui pourront m’orienter vers des protagonistes capables de porter l’histoire. En écoutant les projets des autres candidats, j’ai été édifié. Cette première journée est un parfait succès pour moi. Merci aux initiateurs de ce projet, l’association Ciné Guimbi, merci à nos illustres formateurs, et merci aux autres candidats présents.
